Implosion 24 September 2007

A stitch in time saves nine. If you see a problem now, then fix it. If you don’t, the problem will not go away. Rather, it will fester and get worse. One stitch will become nine.

And, now it is happening.

A generation of the best and brightest Muslims from India and Pakistan moved to the US with one singular goal: prosperity. Some came from wealthy families in India. Others came from poor families. But, all had one goal: to scavenge America in search of its gems. They left their aging parents back home. They brought their tiny children to the US.

After a few years, a realization hit them. Their identities were under threat. Thus, they formed hundreds upon hundreds of identiy-preservation centers, and called them mosques. And, likewise, they used their identity-preservation instinct to subvert the movement of Islam in America.

Their children went searching for an identity. Some embraced their parents. Some rejected their parents. Some embraced an approach to Islam. Some embraced Bollywood and Bhangra. But, in reality, almost all inherited their parents’ ethos focused on identity, with a fierce capitalist undercurrent.

And, all along, nearly everyone avoided the core problems. That festering emptiness and pain in the heart continued to grow. And, these children attempted to avoid the problem further. With marriage. But still, they avoided the problem.

Take a piece of manure, and coat it with more and more layers of Swiss Chocolate, and it’s still manure, but now the chocolate is tainted.

And now, the implosion has begun. Divorce upon divorce upon divorce upon divorce.

I heard once in a khutba something rather poignant. These people came to America seeking diamonds, and in the process, they lost the gold. Their children and grandchildren.

The only thing that money cures is financial debt. Ills of the heart are only cured with contact with God.

And, still they are adding more layers of chocolate. And now their children are doing the same.

The greatest of cowards are the cowards who cannot face themselves.

And more and more stitches are breaking open.

And God knows best.

Self is the hardest thing to face. Why do you think our bodies will give witness to our lives on the “Day”? My friend and I were discussing my lack of prayers and in our conversation determined the fault is mine; no matter how I put it. It resides on me and me alone. I have yet to able handle my “self” to overcome my shortcoming in duties to Allah. I praying on his Rehman and Kerim to forgive me. Its been over two months since that conversation and I yet have to do anything. Its hard bro. Its means change and for most of us change is not what we want. We want to forget and just be happy. Thats the truth.

What a sad post, especially about cultural identity, which changes with each generation, as if it is something to hang on to at all costs, and more important than anything else. This is a kind of nationalism and has the same intellectual errors. 100,000 Indian farmers committed suicide last year, and they stayed home.

All the earth is the Lords, no matter the language, culture, color or religion of its people.

Ya Haqq!
