Do you Fear the Dark? 22 December 2008

Anytime the little boy goes to sleep, he can’t sleep until his mother turns on his night-light or leaves his bedroom door open just enough to let the light peak in. As long as there is light, he is not vulnerable to the mysterious, devious monsters of the night. As long as he has that light, he has salvation.

Sometimes we do not grow out of this fear of the dark.

The single biggest obstacle preventing many of us from adventuring against the grain is usually not ability.  Rather, it is fear.  It is often a fear of the consequences of taking that step.  Meaning, we are often like the man standing in the middle of the gushing rainstorm, afraid to take that next step because that next step might be his last.  That pounding thunder only makes that next step more frightening.  Why would thunder make this step frightening, when it is nothing but sound?  But, it is sudden, pounding, loud sound.  It is sudden sound that we interpret as a threat.  Thus , we are afraid to take that next step.

Instead of walking forward, we shun the storm and the sounds.  We tightly cover our ears and eyes.  It as though we are safer if we are deaf and blind.

The cause of this anxiety is — as it is so often in our lives — fear.

But, the single biggest obstacle preventing many of us from fulfilling Divine prescriptions is often something that causes this fear.

It is God who animates every crackling twist of that lightning.  It is God who animates every pulse pounding beat of the thunder.  It is God who has made that next step in your path to be a solid step or a shaky step.  Meaning, if you are to take your final step toward death, it will happen.  Either the cause will come from the sky, or the ground, or from within you.  How do you know that a sink-hole will not suddenly open and suck you in?  How do you know that a rare disease will not suddenly make you succumb.

So, take the step, trusting with full confidence that Allah will take care of you.

But it does not end there.  We have those obligations that Allah has prescribed for us, and it is fear that often prevents us from fulfilling them.  It is Allah who controls the scary illusions that come from the sky, as well as the scary illusions that come from the ground, as well as the scary illusions that come from within us, as well as the prescriptions.  So, take the step.

Indeed, you will get hurt.  Indeed, you will get scratched.  But, Allah will take care of you through each step.

So, stop fearing that unknown monster in the dark, and take that step.

And Allah knows best.
