Enjoy the Smell of Food 8 October 2007

Fasting can be tough, but you know you will soon be eating. And when you smell the aroma of food-being-cooked, fasting can be even more tough. If you are such a person, then enjoy the smell of food.

Rather than let the smell of food make your stomach rumble in that Pavlovian way (where you get hungry whenever you smell good cooking), let the smell of food excite your nose. Enjoy the smell of food in the way you enjoy the smell of good cologne or perfume, or a wonderful smelling baby, or a wonderful smell of flowers. You don’t plan on eating the baby, do you?

Take a deep breath and enjoy the smell of food while you are fasting. Smell it with your nose and not your stomach. Unlike your heart, your stomach will lie to you.

Take a deep breath and enjoy. Take more deep breaths and enjoy it.

If you are like me, then you are inhaling right now, imagining yourself enjoying the good smell of good food.

So, I don’t fast, but I am Vegan, and I find that using the smell of meat and forbidden foods as something to enjoy rather than something to tempt and lure is definitely the only decent survival tactic. Enjoy the little good things rather than let them lead to the bigger less good things.

Whatever that may mean to you, I think it’s important.

Eid Mubarak, dear Brother, to you and your family :) May the day be filled with love and joy!

Ya Haqq!
