retread| This Poem Fell 27 January 2007

Posted by EDITOR in ABD, Poetry.

Retreads are quality posts from yesterweeks that are given a second run on Saturdays. This poem was originally posted by ABD on 20 July 2006.

This poem was going to be
about something else
until you rounded the corner
and it fell, as I once did.

The choice of preposition is crucial:
fell down? for? in?
I should say, rather, fell over
like an upturned applecart.

And so it is that one moment
collapses into another,
and the applewala must
gather up his fruit again.

I really liked this poem the first time, and like it even more now. Finish it please.

Ya Haqq!

thank you for the vote of appreciation, irving. let me ask you a question: if i took away the “(in progress)”, would the poem look complete?

i often wonder how to know that a poem is finished. usually, it becomes less and less malleable until it congeals and i can’t play with it anymore. when i wrote this, i thought i would have more to say—but now i wonder whether it can stand as it is.

so which preposition is it really?
