Harry Truman is Western Civilization 24 July 2006

I had a professor who praised Bill Clinton as the first intellectual president since Harry S Truman.

That’s such a strange reflection.

I remember Harry S Truman for a few things:

1- His middle initial.

2- Cool quotes, like “The buck stops here” and “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”

3- The Red Scare, seeking out and labelling people as communist sympathizers.

4- The Marshall Plan, to rebuild Europe.

5- Creation of the United Nations.

6- Support for Zionism and Recognition of Israel.

7- Involvement in Vietnam.

and, by the way,

8- The bombing (and resulting incineration) of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

So, it seems then, that if my professor so admires Truman, there is a different president in today’s era he should be admiring more than Clinton.

Indeed, that was a strange association… I find that professors often rant to fill the silence that would otherwise exist in a classroom. Either that or they blurt out any old-thing because they find the sound of their own voices soothing. :)

wasalaam.
