CONTEMPORARY MUSLIM REFLECTIONS ON THE BREADTH OF LIFE
Desire is often seen as something negative.
What is the difference between desiring something and wanting something that is good for you?
The difference is that desiring something comes from your self, from being human, while the wanting of what is good for you comes from Allah through your higher self. That is why Allah through our higher selves, which is connected to all of creation, may want things we wouldn’t ordinarily really desire, such as service to others, and forgiving our enemies. One has only to look at the life and hadiths of the Prophet (pbuh) as the exemplar of such qualities.
